Equity Challenge: Abolishing Poverty

JOIN OUR NEXT EQUITY CHALLENGE!

Connecticut United Ways are joining together to offer the email series, Equity Challenge: Abolishing Poverty! This year's challenge will be kicked-off with a virtual conversation with Pulitzer Prize winner Matthew Desmond.

Matthew will discuss his work which exposes American history, research and original reporting on systemic poverty in America.

Following this kick-off event is the 5-day Equity Challenge: Abolishing Poverty where participants will have the opportunity to further their understanding and engage in our communities by taking part in the email series.

This challenge will feature 5-days of materials to read, watch, and listen, taking a deeper dive into the causes of poverty, racism, and financial inequity. Participants will also be informed of how they can take action towards meaningful change.

Commit to taking 10 to 15 minutes each day of the challenge to watch, listen, or read curated materials emailed each morning.

EQUITY CHALLENGE EMAIL DATES
Monday, March 4 – Friday, March 8

What is the Equity Challenge?

The Equity Challenge is a commitment to devote 10-15 minutes a day for 5 days to learn about the foundations of racism and the different ways that bias, privilege, oppression, and trauma show up in our everyday lives. With this deeper understanding of foundations of racism and how it shapes different people’s lived experiences, we can do our part to make positive change in our community. The Equity Challenge can be an impactful journey for everyone – no matter where you come from or how you identify yourself.

How Did it Begin?

The Equity Challenge was originally developed by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., Dr. Marguerite Penick-Parks, and Debby Irving and was adapted by Food Solutions New England.  From there, it was made available to other organizations, including the United Way of Washtenaw County, from whom we received supportive guidance in designing our own Challenge. We offer the Equity Challenge, adapted for our community, as an important part of our commitment to build an equitable community for all.

How Does it Work?

Every morning of the 5-day Challenge, you’ll receive an email prompt with readings, videos, or podcasts that last 10-15 minutes.  If you choose, you can share your reflections and “Aha!” moments using the hashtags #unitedforequity and #uwgnhequitychallenge and tagging us @UnitedWayofGreaterNewHaven.
